Do I need to lose weight?
To determine if you need to lose weight determine your body mass index (BMI).
If your body mass index is over 25 you may benefit from weight loss.
BMI ranges for adults:
•Underweight: Less than 18.5
•Normal weight (optimum range): 18.5 to 24.9
•Overweight: 25.0 to 29.9
•Obesity (Class I): 30.0 to 34.9
•Obesity (Class II): 35.0 to 39.9
•Obesity (Class III): More than 40

Tips to lose weight:
- Weigh in weekly.
- Eat mindfully/plan your meals/prepare in advance meals and snacks. This helps reduce impulse eating.
- Simplify your diet. It is easier to track and manage what you are eating when you simplify your choices.
- Count your calories/Track your diet. Consider using a app like myfitnesspal. In the end weight loss only occurs when your calorie intake is less then what your body needs. Your body is good at making sure you meet its needs so it is hard to override this talent of your body. Counting calories helps.
- Avoid refined carbohydrates (white flour and sugar).
- Eat more veggies and fruits (plants) and fiber.
- Use a smaller plate. Limit your portion sizes.
- Stay hydrated and do not drink your calories. Staying hydrated is especially important if you are using GLP-1 agonist medications for weight loss.
- Drink black coffee.
- Try intermittent fasting.
- Sleep more. Lack of sleep affects hormones involved in appetite and weight.
- Avoid stress and emotional eating.
- Exercise/Get moving.
How many calories should I eat in a day to lose weight?
To determine your ideal caloric intake to lose 1-2 lbs a week determine your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and then adjust for your activity level. Take this value and subtract 500 calories. Use the link below to calculate your BMR adjusted for your activity level.
Subtract 500 calories from the value you obtained above to determine your daily caloric goal to lose 1-2 lbs a week.
If you do not lose weight eating your daily caloric goal then a 7 day diet log may help determine how to adjust your food intake.
My fitnesspal is a great app to track your daily caloric intake. Here is a link:
Make a plan. Choose a diet!
It doesn't matter what diet plan you follow as long as it limits your caloric intake.
Use a diet that worked well for you in the past or choose a new one but make a plan. This helps reduce impulse eating.
My favorite diet is the old exchange diet chosen based on your target daily calories.
