All medications can have side effects and GLP-1 agonists have several.  Nausea, acid reflux, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation may occur.  Most of these side effects lessen with time and are helped by consuming smaller low-fat meals.  This is why many GLP-1 medications are often started at a low dose and increased slowly as tolerated.  Because GLP-1 medications may reduce thirst individuals are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration and damage to the kidneys.  Mild issues with low bloods sugar can occur but are usually tolerable and self-limited.  

Individuals with a past medical history of pancreatitis or medullary thyroid cancer should not use these medications as well as individuals with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, gastroparesis, and chronic renal disease.
